The MEDARVA Foundation opened Surgeon Immersion, an experiential center at the Short Pump Town Center, during August. Admission-free, the center will allow visitors to learn about human anatomy, surgery, and the work of the MEDARVA Foundation to support scientific research and medical access in Central Virginia.
“We are thrilled to celebrate MEDARVA Healthcare’s 70th anniversary by bringing our mission directly to the community,” said Joanne Whiley, Chair of MEDARVA Healthcare’s Board of Directors. “We were well known as Richmond Eye and Ear Hospital for our first fifty years. This is a great opportunity to educate the community on how we have evolved since then and how we provide services today. »
MEDARVA Healthcare is the last independent, not-for-profit healthcare system based in Richmond, operating the MEDARVA Surgical Centers at Stony Point and West Creek, the MEDARVA Imaging Center, the MEDARVA Center for Low Vision and the MEDARVA Foundation.
“The MEDARVA Foundation has quietly funded medical research at VCU Medical School and UVA Medical School, among others, as well as supporting other local nonprofit organizations that provide direct care to the medically underserved” , explained Cheryl Jarvis, chair of the board of directors of the MEDARVA Foundation. Directors. “But during the pandemic, we started to see the need to support young scientific researchers as they start out in middle school and high school. The level of work these students do is amazing, and when we started thinking about how we could showcase them and inspire others, we developed the idea of a community space that would engage and educate.
The MEDARVA Foundation Surgeon Immersion will be open daily in August from the opening of the Short Pump Town Center until 7:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. on Sundays) and includes a state-of-the-art digital cadaver table and mock surgery booths, 2022 Science Fair Winning Projects, visual projections for children, and more.
