Egypt’s Digital Future Foundation

There is no doubt that the long history of Egyptian civilization is a testament to the worth and worth of this country not only to Egyptians but to the entire world. Throughout history, we have seen unique Egyptian talents make outstanding contributions to the world in art, culture, science, technology, sports and many more. This is also true today as the country abounds with national initiatives to foster innovation and academic research. Gradually entering a digital era propelled by the fourth industrial revolution, the nation is at the forefront of society-wide transformation. Diverting major efforts over the past few years to leverage advanced technologies to accelerate socio-economic development, Egypt is on the path to a digitally powered society.

This year we celebrate 125 years of collaboration in Egypt. Having been present in the country for more than a century, we have witnessed all stages of technological development in the country. With cellular networks being the basis for many of these innovative developments, we have had the privilege of directly participating in Egypt’s progress. In fact, during the first decades of our operations, “Ericsson” became the generic term for the telephone across the country. From installing our first telephone exchange in Alexandria in 1897 connecting Cairo to Alexandria for the first time, to preparing for 5G today, we have come a long way and have had a truly remarkable journey.

An ambitious digital strategy

The Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) States that the Egypt of tomorrow “will have a competitive, balanced and diversified economy”, “dependent on innovation and knowledge”. Thanks to its ambitious national program, Vision 2030which includes a set of eight national goals to be achieved during this decade, Egypt has begun to lay the foundations for this future.

With the goals of Vision 2030 focused on achieving a robust economy, enhancing knowledge and innovation, and improving the quality of life in the country, its achievement is expected to rely heavily on progress in digital technology. Egypt has formulated digital transformation frameworks under Vision 2030 and is moving towards digitalization in key regional industries. The government has also developed two key initiatives, namely ICT Strategy 2030 and Digital Egypt, a comprehensive plan to build the country’s digital economy, to contribute to this digitization dynamic. However, with a heavy emphasis on digital advancements, cellular technology is undoubtedly set to play a pivotal role in Egypt’s future prosperity, but how?

Cellular Networks – Key to Digital Prosperity

Industry 4.0 technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) are spearheading digital transformation. Promising a radical transformation of the economic and social system in Egypt, these technologies have now found their place among the top priorities of Egypt’s political agendas for years to come. They are intended to be building blocks for various development projects across the country, especially smart city projects like Egypt’s new high-tech administrative capital.

Based on connectivity, these advanced technologies require a strong and reliable connection capable of handling rapid data flow. This is where cellular networks like 5G and 4G come in, acting as key enablers of these technologies.

By empowering digital technologies, cellular networks are unlocking a range of use cases across Egypt. Take for example the smart mass transit system that Egypt is working on to implement in cities. As large-scale 5G in the country becomes a reality, it will enable autonomous vehicles, making the intelligent transportation system more efficient in its goals and building a safer, more predictable and sustainable transportation industry in the country.

A bright future

Over the past few years, MCIT has actively launched various projects aimed at improving the quality of fixed broadband in the country and providing high-speed Internet access while expanding the reach of the network in the country. The country is also accelerating the issuance of cell tower permits and has also started offering new frequencies to improve network efficiency. These actions show that Egypt understands the value of connectivity to secure its digital future and demonstrate the country’s commitment to building a thriving digital economy.

Through successful collaborations over the past 125 years of our presence in the country, we have tried to create an environment of knowledge sharing and execution to keep Egypt well equipped for a rapidly changing technological world and we remain committed to helping Egypt achieve its national agendas.

This year, under the patronage of the Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, we successfully organized the Together Apart hackathon to drive innovation in line with Egypt Vision 2030. In line with Digital Egypt’s goals to drive the local innovation and digital skills, we have also led our graduate program in Egypt to provide young talent in the country with support, learning and career development opportunities to transform them into the leaders of tomorrow.

Our efforts to support Egypt in its digital ambitions are just beginning and we look forward to working with our local partners to strengthen the national information and communications technology infrastructure, boost digitalization and move mountains in the world. country’s digital space.
