Enel Foundation Open Africa Power 2022 for young energy professionals

Applications are invited for the Open Africa Power 2022. The Enel Foundation and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) are delighted to launch the call for applications for the 2022 edition of Open Africa Power, the program which each year from of 2018 provides a cohort of young professionals equipped with a comprehensive set of technical, regulatory and business skills needed to spark a sustainable energy future in Africa for all.

This year, the program will engage up to 150 African students and more than 240 alumni, at least 50% of whom are women, in a series of professional development and leadership activities offered in partnership with the best academic institutions in Italy and in Africa.

Open Africa Power 2022 will include online and residential modules from academic institutions such as Strathmore University, University of Cape Town, Politecnico di Torino, Politecnico di Milano, SDA Bocconi, Florence School of Regulation and International University of Venice .

Program components

  • African digital module (May – June): This 8-week module will explore the fundamentals of the global electricity sector through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals. It will cover the following areas:
    • Renewable energy technology, regulation, economics;
    • Network technology, regulation, economy;
    • ICT digitization of the electrical industry.
  • Regulations for the SDG7 online course (May – October): the 5-month course will provide participants with a holistic view of how to design the appropriate policy and regulatory frameworks needed to ensure sustainable energy for all. Successful completion of this course is required to be selected for the Italian module
  • Italian module (October – November): the module will take place in Italy (decision subject to the evolution of the COVID situation). During this 2-week residential module, the best students from the first 2 modules (selected also on the basis of their capstone projects) will explore the new frontiers of the electricity sector and experience innovation first-hand. They will be called upon to actively interact with prestigious academic partners and research representatives, to meet government, commercial and non-profit leaders; engage in dialogue around the issues of Africa’s clean energy future; and visit innovative electrical technology sites.
  • Restitution module: At the end of the Italian module, the alumni will be involved in teaching activities related to the educational initiatives of the Enel Foundation in Africa.


  • Be between 24 and 35 years old on May 3, 2022;
  • Be a citizen of an African country;
  • Currently residing in an African country or planning to move to Africa by the end of 2022;
  • Be eligible to travel to Italy. All candidates are invited to check well in advance the procedure applicable to their specific case;
  • Be a graduate or current student (having an admission letter is also acceptable) of a PhD, Masters, LLM, MPP, or MBA. Undergraduate students or people who are not at least enrolled in a master’s degree are not eligible for this program.
  • One of the two diplomas (bachelor or master) must come from an African university;
  • Have skills and a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career – in the private or public sector – in the field of electricity in the broad sense;
  • Be perfectly proficient in English;
  • Be willing to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women within and beyond the program.

Applicants must provide:

  • A copy of their CV (in PDF format);
  • Copy of their bachelor’s and master’s certificates (as well as possible MBA/PhD certificates) AND academic transcripts (in PDF format);
  • A copy of their Passport (in PDF format);
  • A cover letter (max 700 words, in PDF format);
  • Three letters of recommendation from representatives of industry, academia and/or the public service (in PDF format).
