The James V. Brown Library, 19 E. Fourth St., is pleased to announce that it has received a $5,000 grant from the PPL Foundation.
These funds will support the library’s Summer Learning 2022 program as part of PPL’s Cover to Cover initiative to improve children’s literacy. The PPL Foundation awards annual grants through a competitive application and review process. The PPL Foundation also provided approximately 400 books for children in kindergarten through grade 3 to build their home libraries. These books will complement the library’s summer learning program, “Oceans of possibilities.
Cover to Cover helps children who would otherwise be deprived of reading and learning opportunities over the summer. Not reading during the summer can cause these young people to fall behind by up to two grades by fifth grade.
Research has shown that the pandemic’s impact on K-12 student learning was significant, leaving students on average five months behind in math and four months behind in reading by the end of school. school year, especially among those in the early primary grades. “The pandemic has widened pre-existing opportunities and achievement gaps, hitting historically disadvantaged students the hardest,” according to a study conducted by Education Week.

We are excited to continue this program next year and make a difference in the lives of so many students.
The James V. Brown Library is open for browsing and pick-up 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday; and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
