Troy, Michigan, May 20, 2022 – Today Magna announced that it has signed a three-year, $100,000 annual financial commitment with the Kiefer Foundation as part of the shared goal of ending distraction in the flying.

The announcement comes just after April’s Distracted Driving Month and just before the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer, which is the period from the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day, until the unofficial end of summer, Labor Day.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2020, distracted driving crashes resulted in 3,142 fatalities. Magna is helping to put an end to distracted driving with its financial contribution as well as with safety innovations like its driver and occupant monitoring system – which is due to start mainstream production in 2024.

“Research shows that approximately 30% of all crashes are related to distracted driving, and as a trusted mobility technology provider with safety at the forefront of our work, we are developing real solutions to help keep drivers’ attention on the road,” Magna said. CEO, Swamy Kotagiri. “The Kiefer Foundation’s mission to end distracted driving is critical to helping save lives and we’re thrilled to be able to support while delivering game-changing innovations that help make our roads safer.”

At an event hosted by Magna, the company showcased its first driver and occupant monitoring system – a smart camera system seamlessly integrated into the interior rearview mirror that can actively detect, predict and react to driving distracted. The technology tracks the driver’s gaze, head and body movements to detect inattention, fatigue or drowsiness. If it detects distracted behavior, it alerts the driver with customizable audio or visual notifications. The system also accounts for normal actions such as looking in the exterior mirrors and features in-cab passenger detection for added safety.

“Magna’s contribution to the Kiefer Foundation will help us raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and save lives,” said Kiefer Foundation President Steve Kiefer. “My family was forever changed the day a distracted driver killed my son Mitchel, and with the help of partners like Magna, we’re working towards a future where no parent has to bury a child following a avoidable car accident.”
