Security for All: How the Rapid7 Cybersecurity Foundation will expand access and inclusion

Last updated on Tue 05 Apr 2022 12:15:00 GMT

Rapid7’s mission is to advance cybersecurity for all – and a critical part of that effort is to facilitate access to the field and its best resources. That’s why we provide solutions that meet the needs of large enterprises, but can also be deployed and operated by teams with more limited resources. It’s also why we’ve spent so much time, effort, and capital building open-source tools and research that help democratize security knowledge.

Consistent with this focus, access and inclusion have also been central to our philanthropic and community engagement efforts. Over the years, we have launched and supported many initiatives aimed at increasing diversity by ensuring greater access to careers in cybersecurity. This includes supporting STEM programs that provide experiential learning opportunities with industry professionals, as well as programs like Hack.Diversity that ensure we access the full talent landscape when hiring. our next thousand employees.

Introducing the Rapid7 Cybersecurity Foundation

As we address cybersecurity challenges, we must also remain focused on ensuring underserved and underrepresented people have access to careers and on-the-ground solutions. Over the past 10 years, we’ve allocated millions of dollars to support organizations that help achieve this goal. In 2020, Rapid7 created and funded a donor-advised fund with the Tides Foundation, and in 2021 we donated over $300,000 to numerous organizations from our fund. But we were far from finished. A few months ago, we established the Rapid7 Cybersecurity Foundation and endowed it with $1 million.

The Foundation’s mission is to democratize cybersecurity by focusing on access for the underrepresented and underserved. We do this by promoting a diverse and inclusive cybersecurity workforce, supporting free and open security solutions, and championing those who often have no voice to advance security.

The Foundation will partner with organizations working in the following areas with the goal of creating a secure and prosperous digital future for all:

  • STEM education, diversity and inclusion in technology, and organizations’ efforts to expand opportunities for historically underrepresented groups and make careers in cybersecurity more accessible to all

  • Open source and volunteer tools to help bring effective cybersecurity solutions to underfunded organizations, including nonprofits and municipalities

  • Research and policy advocacy to strengthen the cybersecurity of vulnerable communities, improve cybersecurity awareness, and make achieving effective security outcomes more accessible to all

Putting the goal into practice

After more than 8 years of having had the privilege of serving as General Counsel for Rapid7, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to serve as Executive Director of the Rapid7 Cybersecurity Foundation and lead our ESG (Environmental, social and governance) in full growth. While preparing for this transition, I recently read the excellent Letter to CEOs of 2022 written by Larry Fink, CEO and President of Black Rock. In it, he writes that a clear sense of purpose, consistent values, and commitment and delivery to key stakeholders is what sets truly great companies apart.

Accelerating digital transformation continues to create new challenges and opportunities for cybersecurity practitioners and the industry. It is also about redefining the relationship between a company, its employees and society. fink writes:

Putting your business purpose at the heart of your relationships with your stakeholders is essential to your long-term success. Employees must understand and understand your purpose; and when they do, they can be your strongest advocates. Customers want to see and hear what you stand for as they increasingly seek to do business with companies that share their values. And shareholders need to understand the guiding principle behind your vision and mission.

The Rapid7 Cybersecurity Foundation, whose goal is to help advance cybersecurity for the underserved and underrepresented, is a natural extension of Rapid7’s mission to advance cybersecurity for all. It is part of our efforts to place this guiding objective at the center of our relationship with our customers, our employees and our shareholders.

Later this week, we will unveil our first Social Good Report, which highlights our broader work for social good, for which the Foundation will be an important complementary vehicle. We can’t wait to get started and look forward to engaging with our community members and organizations around the world to help build a safe and prosperous digital future for all.
