IFRS Foundation Trustees Call on Jeffrey Hales and Michael Jantzi for ISSB

IFRS Foundation trustees named Jeffrey Hales, SASB Standards Board Chair and University of Texas Accounting Professor, and Michael Jantzi, VRF Board Director and Founder and former CEO of Sustainalytics, as members of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), as of July. 2022. The appointments of Dr. Hales and Mr. Jantzi bring the membership of the ISSB to eight, allowing the ISSB to function. Over the next few weeks, trustees will complete full ISSB membership with an appropriate balance and diversity of expertise and geographies around the world. They currently plan to announce new appointments in July, with the goal of reaching the full roster of 14 members in the third quarter of 2022.

Their appointments, along with the recently announced appointment of Verity Chegar, Vice Chair of the SASB Standard Board, will bring to the ISSB invaluable insights into sustainability and industry standardization from the Value Reporting Foundation, and add unique expertise to his work. .

Dr. Hales’ role will be part-time―he will continue to teach at the University of Texas. Mr. Jantzi’s role is full-time. Their base will be the ISSB office of the IFRS Foundation in Montreal.

Dr. Hales has been Chairman of the SASB Standards Board since 2018. He is also a Professor of Accounting at the University of Texas at Austin, USA. His widely published research has focused on reporting standards, regulation and behavioral finance. Previously, he was a research fellow at the Financial Accounting Standards Board in the United States and a member of its Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council. Dr. Hales was also a member of the Climate Disclosure Standard Board, now part of the IFRS Foundation. He holds a doctorate in management from Cornell University in New York.

Mr. Jantzi has 30 years of experience in responsible investment and sustainable finance. He joins the ISSB from Morningstar, where he currently serves as Managing Director of ESG Strategy. He is the founder and former CEO of Sustainalytics, an ESG research and rating company that rose to global market prominence under Michael’s leadership and was later acquired by Morningstar in 2020. In 1992, he founded Jantzi Research and led a merger of several companies that formed Sustainalytics in 2009. He currently sits on the board of VRF and the Principles for Responsible Investment. He is also a member of the Independent Review Committee on Setting the Standards in Canada and a member of the MakeWay Foundation Board of Directors. Mr. Jantzi holds a Masters in International Relations from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada.
