PLDT Inc., its wireless subsidiary Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) and the MVP Sports Foundation (MVPSF) support the decision of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) to establish a trust fund for successful national athletes medals in the Olympic Games, the Southeast Asian Games and the Asian Games.
Following Team Philippines’ successful performance at this year’s SEA Games in Vietnam, POC said donations from private companies will automatically go to the Athletes’ Trust Fund.
Filipino athletes amassed 52 gold, 70 silver and 105 bronze medals by the end of the SEA Games, including the stellar feats of MVPSF-supported athletes like Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz, multi -Caloy Yulo medalist, champion and record pole. outfielder EJ Obiena and Smart-backed esports team SIBOL, among others.
“PLDT, Smart and MVPSF are one with the Committee to ensure that our national team members receive the help they need to perform their duties well and without worry,” said Alfredo S. Panlilio, Chairman and CEO of PLDT and Smart, and Chairman and Director of MVPSF.
“As long-time supporters of Filipino athletes, we look forward to seeing this development inspire and motivate our players every time they compete on the world stage,” added Panlilio, who is also the POC’s first vice president. .
The sports initiatives of PLDT, Smart and other companies chaired by business leader Manuel V Pangilinan are centralized under MVPSF.
From basketball, badminton, gymnastics, weightlifting, esports and more, the organization has empowered 17 national sports agencies, supported hundreds of athletes and helped build of the nation through sport advocacy since 2011.
Through MVPSF, PLDT and Smart have also built several sports centers for training Filipino athletes, including gymnastics, badminton and boxing.
